How does Acuicy calculate Scope 1 & 2 emissions?

Scope 1 emissions include direct greenhouse gas emissions originating from sources owned or controlled by the organization. This includes emissions from fuel combustion in boilers, vehicles, or other equipment directly utilized by the organization.

Scope 2 emissions include the indirect greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the generation of purchased electricity, heating, and cooling consumed by the organization. These emissions stem from activities not directly managed by the organization, but are linked to its energy consumption.

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions are categorized based on their sources, following the GHG Protocol methodology [1]. In generating these emission profiles, Acuicy uses best in class emissions data that is publicly reported and available. The electric grid factors used in our algorithms are specific to the Canadian province(s)/territory(s) and/or US state(s) where a user's operations are located and the emission factors used for fuel combustion are specific to the type of fuel used. The emission projection does not yet include the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from refrigerant release, however this information will be added to Acuicy soon.

What carbon accounting methodologies or protocols does Acuicy follow?

Acuicy follows the GHG Protocol [1] accounting standards, the most widely recognized global standard for calculating and reporting carbon emissions. This also aligns with disclosures to the CDP [2]. Over 92% of Fortune 500 companies that report emissions data to CDP do so according to the GHG Protocol accounting standards[3].

Does Acuicy calculate Scope 3 emissions?

Acuicy’s initial beta version available now is focused on options to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Future releases will include a module specifically designed to engage and incentivize suppliers to reduce Scope 3 emissions in supply chains. Sign up here [link to be added] to receive updates and news from Acuicy.

Can Acuicy support all industries and business locations at this time?

Acuicy’s platform is currently available in a beta release. This means Acuicy is currently only available for companies with business operations in Canada and the United States. We will be expanding our geographic coverage in future releases. Register your interest [add beta registration link] in trying our beta version and we’ll let you know if we can support your type of business operations at this time. If we’re not ready for you, we’ll let you know as soon as we are.

How accurate are Acuicy’s results?

Acuicy’s proprietary algorithms and deep industry database, which generate the financial business case tailored for each customer’s low-carbon options, have been developed using best in class research methodologies, including data mining, data validation and data cleaning.

While Acuicy’s algorithms customize the results for each of our customer’s specific business operations, the data and results are presented as estimates that will require additional validation for local conditions and economic fluctuations. These estimates are affected by, but not limited to:

• Cost data in our database is updated on a regular basis but it is not real-time data. Therefore, our data may not reflect fluctuations in prices like fuel or currency exchange rates
• The availability and cost of the low-carbon options on Acuicy will vary according to factors such as geographic location, facility design and layout, and operational behaviours
• Assumptions used to provide the list of low-carbon options, including the use of averages for certain variables such as industry energy profiles, weather, and temperature may not be representative of user profiles
• Possible hidden costs associated with the implementation of the low-carbon options including but not limited to process interruptions, structural requirements, hazardous material abatement, supply chain disruptions, project delays, additional training, etc.

Our data is continually being updated and future product releases will further refine the customized results.

After our customers receive their results from Acuicy, the next step is to contact a certified contractor for detailed specifications and obtain a quote with local pricing. Additionally, we recommend conducting a comprehensive audit, such as an energy audit and/or operational audit, before and after implementing any of the options to determine actual emissions reductions and cost savings achieved post-implementation.
